On Hold!
Cast:
Tutor – A well dressed and proper woman with excellent posture. Student – A carelessly dressed woman with wild hair and bad posture.
Location:
In a study of a prosperous, upscale home.
Play:
The play opens with the two sitting at a very nice table with two stacks of book on it. The student listens to her mobile phone. The Tutor reads a text on her mobile phone. The Tutor puts her mobile down on the table in front of her.
Tutor: I think . . .
The Student shots her hand up in the air for quiet. The Tutor sighs. She then taps her nicely done fingernails upon the table. The Student frowns at the noise.
Tutor: No really! I’ve . . .
The Student put her index finger over lips for continued quiet. The Tutor stands up in disgust. Takes a step away from the table and then she turns and comes back. She picks up her mobile phone, her books and starts to leave.
Student: (puts her hand over her mobile phone) Hey! You can’t leave. We have a tutoring session.
Tutor: (rolls her eyes) But you’re . . .
The Student puts up her hand for quiet.
Student: Just a minute (to the Tutor and then into the phone) Yeah, yeah, I’ll hold. (to the Tutor) I’m on hold. Let’s do this.
Tutor: (sits back down) Do what? Exactly?
Student: (fanning the air over the books on the table) You know. Go over my assignments.
Tutor: (put her books back on the table) Did you do the assignments?
Student: Well, I thought that’s what we did here?
Tutor: It’s not the way this is supposed to work. It’s only that way because you procrastinate so much.
Student: Leave my personal life out of this. That is none of your business.
Tutor: (stands up again) You always put things off.
Student: Always is a pretty domineering term. Who pays who around here?
Tutor: It is not.
The Student nods yes with raised eyebrows.
Tutor: (sighs) But you never do your work!
Student: Never is just like always, domineering. Why are you so rigid? Can’t you lighten up a bit?
Tutor: Lighten up? Why I . . .
Student: Shhhh! (points at the mobile phone) Just got off hold . . . Yes, I’m here. Have been. Yes. I can talk. If you can.
The Tutor sighs deeply, puts her books back on the table loudly and sits back down. The Student frowns at the book’s noise. The Tutor then picks up her mobile phone and starts texting.
