From the Latin Meaning . . .
Cast:
Tutor – A well dressed and proper woman with excellent posture. Student – A carelessly dressed woman with wild hair and bad posture.
Location:
In a study room of the library.
Play:
The play opens with the two sitting at a table. The Tutor is writing carefully on a sheet of paper while maintaining a straight back bone. As she writes, the Student leans over the table with her face close in on her writing. The Student makes little faces as she watches the writing.
Tutor: Pro. From the Latin meaning, in front or before. Crastin. Again from the Latin meaning tomorrow. And –ation. More Latin indicating an action.
Student: Oh!!! Procrastination. That’s what you said?
Tutor: You know it is. You are always procrastinating. You always put off doing your homework.
Student: (Sits up but slumps in her chair) Maybe sometimes? But I don’t make a habit of it.
Tutor: Yes! You do. It is the word procrastination.
Student: (leans forward and scan the page in an exaggerated way) Where? I don’t see habit there.
Tutor: (frowning) I mean in the definition of procrastination. It means habitually postponing things that need to be done.
Student: (scratching her messy hair and sitting back) I suppose habit is a Latin word too?
Tutor: Yes! It is. It means condition or appearance.
Student: (smiling devilishly) Yeah. My mother doesn’t like the way I dress either. (looks down at her clothes and smiles) I guess you agree with her. She always likes the way you dress though, she says it often.
Tutor: (sighs) Could we get to your homework please? We are just wasting time here.
Student: Better to waste time than waste water. (she holds her nose and giggles oddly) This is Southern California. Where water is scarce, but where wasting time has become a life style!
Tutor: What are you talking about?
Student: We wait in traffic. We wait in line at Disneyland. We wait for the next big earthquake. And we are always waiting for it to rain! That water thing again. All that time waiting, just a waste of time. Angelenas are great time wasters. Wasting time is much better than wasting water. You can’t drink time. Maybe you could if it was a mixed drink. Say time mixed with space. (she takes a mock drink from a mock cup. She laughs at herself)
Tutor: (shakes her head in disgust) You didn’t do the homework, did you?
Student: But I put it on my To-do-list. (she dramatically pulls out a piece of paper from her Jacket pocket and scans it with her exaggerated expression) Opps! (she giggles) Could I borrow your pen? (she reaches over and take the tutor’s pen and scribbles in her paper) There! It is now! Home work to be done! (she taps the paper loudly with each syllable she spoke)
Tutor: I don’t know why you pay for a tutor if you never have any work for us to go over?
Student: (makes an even more exaggerated face) Oh yeah, about that . . . uh . . . the check.
Tutor: (sighs and shakes her head) You don’t have that either.
Student: (shaking her head but points at her list) Didn’t write it on the list. Sorry! (she writes boldly on the paper) There! It is now.
Tutor: (stumps in her chair) Why do I even bother showing up?
Student: Good Question. I’ll write that down later. Are we done here? (she springs up out of her chair)
